Anti-Bullying

It is my professional duty to maintain a safe, nurturing, and creative environment conducive for learning and building productive relationships without bias.

My classroom is a "No Bullying Zone". In observance of National Bullying Prevention Month in October, our SGA sponsors an annual school-wide anti-bullying campaign. In the Fall of 2019 the theatre arts department will present, THE BULLY SHOW, a play that encourages dialogue about speaking out against bullying. My classroom expectations outline penalties for ill-behavior which includes bullying. Cooperative group activities allow students to collaborate with different classmates throughout the year. Students gain insight into resolving differences and embracing one another's unique perspectives. Theatre often serves as a safe haven for students having difficulty feeling a sense of security and purpose. High school can be a very ostracizing experience for teens who feel alienated from the popular culture. The arts allow students to express their inner most thoughts through journaling, role play and learning about the challenges of pioneers in the arts. I make it a goal to incorporate biographies in my literary assignments. Students are introduced to people who were abandoned, ridiculed and marginalized, yet found the strength to overcome the obstacles and forge ahead to realize their dreams. Such stories include the Michaela DePrince biography, Arthur Mitchell, Katherine Dunham, Alvin Ailey and many others. Students write short essays and are asked to share any inspiration gained from reading about these pioneers.
